StepManiaX is the brainchild of Kyle Ward, who was behind rhythm games like ReRave. This game takes the familiar concept of the dance stage video game(i.e., step on the arrows at the best time in co-ordination with the music), and tweaks it to keep the focus on playability, fun and exercise. The latter is more commonly known as “exergaming” or “exertainment” when it comes to having fun while working up a sweat. Arrows float up from the bottom of the screen towards the top, but instead of hitting arrows as they overlap, you simply need to step on the correct arrow when it reaches the goal line at the top of the screen. As with other dance games, you can play with a friend at the same time.

The pads (better known as the “stage”) in particular have been engineered to provide best-in-class functionality, taking years of experience that the rhythm game community has had with failing pads to create something durable and long-lasting. They are also easier to repair than in older DDR or PIU games, using more commonly available parts. Even though this model is designed for home/non-commercial use, the pads used between the non-commercial and commercial models are the same!
