Stern Pinball has officially unveiled Pokémon as their first milestone release of 2026. This brings the legendary franchise to arcades, leading the way for pinball as they seek to appeal to younger audiences.
Developed in collaboration with The Pokémon Company International, this new machine blends nostalgic elements from the original animated series with Stern’s latest hardware platform to create a feature-rich, operator-friendly attraction. Available in Pro, Premium, and Limited Edition models, Pokémon is positioned to appeal to both collectors and location-based entertainment venues alike.

Catching Pokémon on the Playfield
Powered by Stern’s SPIKE 3 technology, Pokémon by Stern Pinball invites players to step into the role of a Trainer and “catch ’em all” in a dynamic, battle-driven playfield experience. The core objective centers around shooting the illuminated and mechanically animated Poké Ball target to capture Pokémon and build a complete collection.
The game takes players across four distinct habitats, where they discover and bond with fan-favorite Pokémon. The playfield features Pokémon-themed ramps, spinners, and targets, along with a lively animatronic Pikachu that reacts to gameplay. Battles are central to the experience, as players face rival Trainers and confront Team Rocket in custom battle sequences. One of the standout interactive elements is the Meowth Balloon toy, which swoops down into the battle arena to challenge the player mid-game.
Premium and Limited Edition models add an interactive electromagnet beneath the playfield, introducing unpredictable ball movement and added intensity during arena battles. Despite these mechanical differences, the core layout remains largely consistent across models, ensuring that the overall gameplay feel is cohesive whether in an arcade or a private collection.
A Nostalgic Presentation with Modern Connectivity
This adaptation of Pokémon into a pinball machine leans heavily into nostalgia while embracing modern features. It incorporates video clips from the original Pokémon animated series and includes custom voice overs from Pikachu and Giovanni, leader of Team Rocket. The iconic Pokémon Theme song is also integrated into the experience, reinforcing the connection to the franchise’s early days.

Stern’s Insider Connected system plays a significant role in the long-term appeal of the game. Players who sign in with their Insider Connected account can track the Pokémon they catch across different machines and locations. Each captured Pokémon is added to their personal collection within the Insider Connected app, adding a layer of progression and replay value that extends beyond a single session.
For operators, this connectivity can drive repeat visits and engagement, especially in family entertainment centers and arcades where leaderboard competition and collectible tracking resonate strongly with younger audiences.
Pro, Premium, and Limited Edition Models
As with many recent Stern releases, Pokémon is offered in three configurations: Pro, Premium, and Limited Edition. While the playfields share a similar foundation, Premium and LE models include additional mechanical features such as the electromagnet in the arena and other enhanced components.
The Limited Edition model is capped at 750 units globally and includes several premium upgrades. These enhancements feature the updated Expression Lighting System and Speaker Expression Lighting System with Pokémon-themed effects, a full-color mirrored backglass, high-definition cabinet decals, custom Pokémon-themed armor, anti-reflection playfield glass, shaker motor, upgraded audio system, and a sequentially numbered plaque. Each LE unit also comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity and a digital LE owner’s badge within Insider Connected.
For collectors, the LE model represents a high-end, display-worthy piece. For operators, the Pro and Premium models may offer a more accessible entry point while still delivering the full Pokémon experience.
A Strategic License for the Arcade Market
From a business standpoint, Pokémon is one of the most logical licenses Stern could pursue. The franchise spans generations, with appeal that reaches beyond anime and video games into trading cards, films, and merchandise. This cross-generational recognition makes Pokémon by Stern Pinball a strong candidate for high-traffic venues looking to attract families and younger players.
Unlike more niche or mature-themed pinball titles, Pokémon has broad, mainstream appeal. Its accessible theme and familiar characters may help draw new players toward pinball cabinets in environments where redemption and video games typically dominate floor attention.
