Capcom and Bandai Namco are testing a new arcade title called
, a light-gun shooter that reimagines the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 for the arcade. This version blends familiar characters like Leon and Claire with classic rail shooter gameplay, all wrapped inside a modern cabinet designed for arcade floors. It was recently given an early location test, where the cabinet and the gameplay already show off a bold mix of nostalgia and fresh mechanics.
A Return to Light-Gun Action
Resident Evil 2: Dead Shot plays out over a series of on-rails missions based on key parts of the remake’s story—kind of like that old-school PS1 “classic” Resident Evil: Survivor. The test unit that was available for a short time at a Namco location in the UK showed only two levels, Prologue and Hunted, with three more greyed-out selections on the stage screen, hinting at a longer full campaign to come.
Instead of free movement, players are guided automatically through the environment, just like in classic arcade shooters. But where this game stands out is in its focus on precision. Enemies don’t overwhelm with sheer numbers. Instead, the challenge centers around hitting clean headshots and maintaining accuracy under pressure. Miss too many times, and the slower reload time becomes a real problem, especially since the game auto-reloads when your clip empties, without the quicker option of manual reloads.
That deliberate reload speed adds real tension to every moment, making even basic encounters feel dangerous if you’re off your mark. Scoring and rankings are also built around accuracy, with extra points for stringing together headshot streaks. There’s also a small collectible mini-game involving the “Mr. Raccoon” mascot, which adds a bit of charm between firefights.
Cabinet Design As Part of the Experience
Where Dead Shot really sets itself apart is with its cabinet setup. Unlike many modern shooters that use mounted weapons or environmental seats, this one uses wired light-gun pistols and encourages players to stand. The floor includes a bass-shaker setup to add feedback during heavy action moments, so players feel every explosion or enemy lunge.
There is a small ledge inside the enclosure for sitting, but it’s clear that the game is built around standing play. The enclosure itself has a design that feels more immersive than typical light-gun cabinets, somewhere between the open setup of classic House of the Dead cabinets and the enclosed feel of games like Mission: Impossible Arcade.
The wired pistols provide responsive aim control and allow for faster reaction times compared to mounted options. That setup alone gives Dead Shot a very different feel from other current arcade rail shooters that tend to lean on bulkier, fixed-position guns.
Visuals and Audio: Straight from the Remake
Dead Shot uses the same visual assets as the Resident Evil 2 remake, so everything from the character models to the lighting is high quality and instantly recognizable. While it’s not a 1:1 remake of the original game’s full campaign, the detail in each level makes it feel like a true adaptation rather than a watered-down arcade spin-off.
Sound design also plays a big role here. Audio cues from enemies help guide the player’s attention, and the bass floor adds physical feedback during key moments. Together with the sharp graphics, these features create an experience that feels intense without being overwhelming.
Right now, Resident Evil 2: Dead Shot is still in testing and hasn’t been confirmed for a full release. If it follows the pattern of similar titles in the genre, it could still be a year or more before the game appears in arcades globally. However, if player feedback from the test location was strong, there’s a good chance this could roll out more widely. We’ll certainly carry it here at PrimeTime Amusements if it sees that roll out!
With its blend of detailed visuals, responsive light-gun mechanics, and a cabinet designed to pull players in, Resident Evil 2: Dead Shot has the potential to become a standout title in the next wave of arcade shooters. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the franchise or just looking for a new high-score challenge, this one’s worth keeping an eye on.
