The international sensation MaiMai DX is now available for venues in North America thanks to Sega Amusements.

First released in Japan and other international venues in 2012, Sega’s MaiMai is a rhythm game that offers a premium crafted music gaming experience that has garnered a strong cult following all over the world. The game uses a specially crafted monitor bezel with integrated controls, offering the appearance of a circular screen; that same display shows a rectangular display at the top for an interactive marquee. This unique appearance is often remarked as making the game look like a front-loaded washing machine – but guaranteed, this is infinitely more entertaining than washing clothes!

To play the game, users insert a credit and select one of many licensed songs. When the game itself starts, different types of notes appear at the center of the display, then they move out towards the rim of the touchscreen, where there are also physical controls. The style of note determines the type of move the player must make, whether that’s tapping, touching or holding the note, sliding with it on the screen, paired notes, and so on. These all move coinciding with the music so players feel like they are truly playing the song as an artist and not just a listener.

How quickly & accurately a player responds to the notes is also given a judgment, whether that is being too late or early to interact with it, then there are indicators that will state how accurate the player was in their timing (Miss, Good, Great, Perfect, and Critical Perfect). Better accuracy equals better points scored, with Critical Perfect’s being the most desired timings to hit just right. Note that there are also multiple difficulty settings for each song, allowing players at different skill levels to select what best fits their liking.

MaiMai DX comes with a wide range of songs, from original music made just for this game and other Sega rhythm arcade titles, to mainstream content fitting in the anime and “J-Pop” music genres. Thanks to the online connectivity, more music is always going to become available, keeping the game fresh. Note that all music has proper licensing, which includes performance rights.
