Ice Cold Beer was originally developed and produced by Taito back in 1983 where it became a classic electromechanical arcade hit. The game did so well for operators, particularly in bars, that many machines continued earning well into the 1990s. Since then, the game has passed on into becoming a highly-sought after collectors item, but with a limited number of units out there, the price just kept going up.

Jump forward to today and bar/arcades are more popular than ever. Electromechanical games like pinball do exceptionally well in those environments but there hasn’t been much in the way of alternatives from the norm. As collectors and operators themselves, Retro Arcade Remake set about to reproduce this popular game so today’s market can enjoy a truly faithful remake.

For those new to the game, the concept is easy to learn but a true challenge to master. Players control a “see-saw” rod with a small steel ball on it by using two joysticks. Each stick controls the height of the side, so if you push the right stick forward, the right side will lift up and vice versa. You goal is to navigate the ball on this balance beam into the 10 lit holes cut into the playfield. Making this even more difficult are numerous unlit holes – if the ball falls into any one of them, it’s game over! If you make it to a lit hole, the rod returns to the bottom and you go for the next one. Bars can offer prizes (like a free ice cold beer) to players who manage to reach all 10.

If you were to place a 1983 Ice Cold Beer next to this remake, the only difference that you might spot is the more vibrant color from the recent prints and no scuffs from use. Officially licensed from Taito, Retro Arcade Remake has taken great pains to ensure that every measurement and print is exact, that the controls also react and feel the same. Thanks to modern technology, the internals have improved for greater reliability but otherwise this will play just like you remember it when it was new.
