Miniature arcade cabinets are the perfect solutions for people that don’t quite have the real estate for original arcade machines, but that still don’t want to miss out on the joys of collecting their favorite retro games from their childhoods. New Wave Toys is one of the businesses that works tirelessly to shrink down our favorite retro games into miniature cabinets, and then gives us the chance to acquire them for a very low price, at least when compared to their full-sized counterparts, and without the need to have a dedicated gaming room. Or heck, even if you DO have a gaming room, you can fit much more of these into the same space.
Dragon’s Lair is one of the latest games to join New Wave Toys’ catalog of miniature cabinets, allowing everyone to enjoy this fantastic title originally animated by the legendary Don Bluth, but on a much smaller, compact size.
For those who are unfamiliar with this game, Dragon’s Lair was—and still is—a very interesting title. It’s more an interactive cartoon than an actual videogame, as it features stellar animations and scenes similar to what you would see in an animated movie. This is greatly due to the fact that the game was animated by Don Bluth, the artist who brought us timeless classics like An American Tail, The Land Before Time, All Dogs go to Heaven, and Titan A.E., among many others.
Dragon’s Lair features an animated storyline with scenes that play out automatically, centered around the adventures of a knight called Dirk the Daring as he ventures into a castle to rescue the missing princess. The gameplay focuses mostly on pressing the correct buttons at the right moments to keep Dirk out of harm as he explores the depths of the castle. Pressing the wrong button will get the knight killed in various ways that are often entertaining and amusing to watch, but that ultimately lead to a game over once all lives are lost.
While the plot is as generic as it sounds, Dragon’s Lair stands out due to its amazing animations and engaging gameplay that keeps players glued to the screen through the duration of Dirk’s adventures as missing one of the countless visual or audio cues means certain death for the poor knight.
New Wave Toys’ latest creation brings Dragon’s Lair to life in miniature, in a 1/6 scale of the original, and on 4.2” screen. Though significantly smaller than the original, the 12” game also costs a fraction of the price, going for $120 on New Wave Toys’ online catalog. Though players can enjoy it in the small cabinet, the game also offers modern features such as HDTV connectivity via HDMI cable, as well as external USB Controller support for players who want to enjoy it on their big TVs, with a modern gamepad. And lastly, the cabinet comes in a colorful box with a unique design, for those who merely want to show it off in their collections instead of playing it.
While the Dragon’s Lair x RepliCade mini cabinet is currently out of stock on New Wave Toys’ website, they restock regularly, so check by often if you want to place your own order.
