Racing fans have been waiting years for the next big Wangan Midnight arcade game, and now, it’s finally here. Bandai Namco has officially revealed Wangan Midnight: Speed Ignition, a brand-new entry in the long-running series. This isn’t just Maximum Tune 7 with a fresh coat of paint—it’s a complete overhaul with a new title, a redesigned arcade cabinet, and modernized gameplay mechanics.
With location tests scheduled to begin soon in Japan, let’s take a look at what makes Speed Ignition such a major step forward.
A Fresh Start for the Series
One of the biggest surprises about this reveal is the name itself. Since 2004, every arcade game in the series has carried the Maximum Tune branding. Speed Ignition marks a clear shift, breaking away from that tradition. While the core gameplay will still focus on high-speed highway racing, Bandai Namco is aiming to refine the experience with a new engine and updated mechanics.
This change also signals a fresh direction for the game’s development. The project is being led by Kazuhiro Maeda, a key figure behind Maximum Tune up to 5DX+. His return to the franchise suggests that Bandai Namco wants to bring back some of the best elements of previous games while modernizing the overall experience.
New Cabinet, New Racing Experience
The arcade cabinet has been completely redesigned, moving away from past setups. Some early rumors suggested a multi-screen or curved monitor approach, but the official reveal shows a more streamlined design. One of the biggest upgrades is the enhanced control system, which includes:

Confirmed Cars So Far
Bandai Namco has only revealed a few cars at this stage, but the lineup already features some iconic models:
- Nissan GT-R T-Spec – A high-performance version of Nissan’s legendary supercar.

- Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II (BNR34) – One of the most beloved tuner cars in history.

Location Tests and Potential Worldwide Release
Japanese players will be the first to try Speed Ignition at two location tests:
- Namco Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture – March 21-29, 2025
- Namco Lazona Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture – March 28-April 2, 2025
While there’s no official confirmation yet, there’s growing speculation that Bandai Namco may be planning a worldwide launch. The company has been expanding its arcade presence in the West, and with the success of games like Taiko no Tatsujin, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Speed Ignition make its way to North America and Europe.
