Have you ever wanted to own a piece of gaming history? Now you can, thanks to the collaboration between Retro Arcade Remakes and Atari. The two companies have joined forces to create authentic reproductions of classic arcade game boards, called PCBs, that collectors can add to their collection.
According to an article in Arcade Heroes, Retro Arcade Remakes and Atari are producing working reproductions of classic Atari arcade game boards. This means collectors can now own a piece of history that they can actually play – or mount to a wall as art. Imagine experiencing the thrill of playing classic games like Asteroids, Arkanoid or Archon, just as they were meant to be played. The downsides of this are several, however, starting with the fact that there are currently only five (out of the dozens of games Atari developed) PCBs available: Major Havoc, Gravitar, Black Widow, Warlords, and Lunar Lander. Food Fight and Millipede will be produced at a later date. On top of that, these repro PCBs are not populated, which means that while they’re technically functional, interested users must remove the components from an existing board, then attach all the components before they’re of any use. This would not be an easy task to undertake.
These PCBs, however, are meant to be purchased as collectibles, considering that they each come with text printed on them, detailing the history of the game and how to play them. And this is without mentioning how there are only very few of these being manufactured, with each being individually serialized on release.
But that’s not all.
Atari is also making waves in the retro gaming scene by acquiring Nightdive Studios, the developer behind such remasters as Quake and Doom 64. With this acquisition, Atari is showing their commitment to bringing classic games back to life for modern audiences. Nightdive is currently working on the much-awaited and much-hyped System Shock remake, which is sure to please fans of the cult classic franchise.
For those who want to experience old Atari games without purchasing a full arcade cabinet, there are plenty of options available. Classic-retro-games.com offers a wide range of retro game remakes of Atari 8-bit games available for Windows PC. From Asteroids to Archon, there’s something for everyone.
And if you’re looking to expand your retro gaming collection even further, the Atari website has you covered. They offer a variety of classic consoles and cartridges, as well as physical games, including never-released and rare titles from the 1970s and 1980s.
With Atari’s recent acquisitions and collaborations, it’s clear that they’re dedicated to keeping the spirit of retro gaming alive. So, whether you’re a collector looking to add to your collection or a gamer wanting to experience classic games, Atari has something for you.
