Revealed in April last year as a Nintendo Switch exclusive title release, the remake for the 1996 classic arcade rail shooter game, The House of the Dead, has just received another big update. This time it is in the form of the reveal of their physical edition offering. The project which is spearheaded and developed by MegaPixel Studios and will be published by Microids had only been announced last year, followed by a period of complete silence—a silence that was broken very recently by this new update.
This new announcement was short but sweet, consisting of the reveal of the physical versions of the game, which is quite cool since there were rumors floating around that it would be a digital-only launch. This new announcement showed us that the game would not only be released physically, but that it would have two versions; a standard version, and a special “Limidead Edition” version. The former is just what you’d expect; a box with a cool design that contains the game cartridge. The latter, however, features a bunch of goodies and upgrades including a superior lenticular box art design, several stickers, and two character stands to showcase on your desk or shelf.
Even though the release looks quite enticing, especially if you were a fan of the OG HotD games growing up, we still have one burning question that has gone unanswered so far: What will the gameplay be like? Fans of the original would know that House of the Dead used light guns for all its on-rails gameplay. And while this technology has been available for home consoles for decades, this remake has only shown us what the game will look like, but not how it plays.
Rumors around the web have stated that the game will use the Joycon gyroscope and analog sticks for aiming and shooting, which is definitely serviceable and is a gameplay trend that is currently on the rise, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet. Still, the devs have to come up with a good control scheme since it’ll be pivotal to the game’s success. In this regard, we can’t help but get nightmare flashbacks about the old school Time Crisis home version on the original PlayStation, or other similar games which, if you didn’t have a light gun, would force you to aim your crosshairs with the directional buttons. It goes without saying that this made it all but impossible to enjoy, let alone finish, the games.
But we guess time will tell as to what The House of the Dead: Remake has in store for us. In the meantime, you can head on the game’s product page on the Nintendo Store to check it out, or you could probably also find it in the eshop on your Nintendo Switch. And though the released date is marked as “TBD” on the website, information online suggests that an April-May release might be the more plausible scenario here.
