Today’s news is going to be short but sweet, particularly the latter considering that we’re talking about a brand new release in the States. As you can probably glean from the title of this update, we’re talking about the new Sky Riders videmption game by Ace Amusement, which revives a classic arcade concept by Namco with a modern update to the graphics and cabinet.
That concept is based upon Prop Cycle, an obscure arcade exclusive game from Namco originally released in 1996. It’s a novel idea that features a stationary bike, not unlike the ones you’d see at your local gym, and puts a game to it. For Ace Amusements’ part, they have embellished it with a unique ‘steampunk’ casing design, and then stuck two of them in front of twin HD displays alongside a couple of air blowers on either side of the bike handles. The result is a one-of-a-kind game (for the present market) that lets you pedal to soar through the skies, and use your bike handles to steer your glider left, right, up, or down, to collect prizes and navigate a variety of circuits. And in the end, like any other videmption game, the user can score tickets for their efforts, which they can trade in for prizes once they get enough. That said, operators can run this as an Amusement Only game, where you just play for points.
As you can probably guess, Sky Riders is designed to be challenging not only in execution, by having to actually steer your craft, but also physically, as users need to be constantly pedaling to get around the stages. And the faster they pedal, the faster they will go, as shown on-screen as well as by the increasing intensity of the wind emitted by the blowers which, by the way, are an awesome addition to the user’s immersion.
Though Sky Riders has been around for a little over a year now, it finally made its way here to the US, from the hands of distributor Amusement Source International. According to Arcade Hero, this game was supposed to be unveiled at IAAPA, but it was one of the unfortunate models that was stuck in shipping and didn’t make it in time for the event. Nevertheless, if you’re interested in getting one for your business, ASI is the way to go… at least as soon as it’s listed on their website.
