You’d think that, with a concept as simple and worn out like Snakes, it’d be difficult to monetize a game in this style in 2019. However, developer Steve Howse proved us wrong back in 2016 when he released Slither.io, a game that quickly rose to the top in popularity in both the Play Store, and as a browser-based game. The game is available both on mobile devices and PC, by downloading it from the aforementioned store, or by playing it on any web browser, respectively. It features some of the most simplistic gameplay that you can imagine but, due to its nature as an MMO game that reimagined a concept that was famous decades past, fans (especially kids) took to it like a moth to a lamp.
Slither.io is about as simple as games can get. You take control of a colorful worm and must use your mouse cursor to steer it in any direction. The objective is to consume as many pellets or dots as you can, by slithering over them, in order to make your worm grow. Every dot you collect adds to your total score. However, not all dots have the same value as some are larger than others, especially the ones dropped by players who are eliminated. It’s possible to collect a single dot, and find yourself growing considerably in length. At the end, the idea is to collect enough dots to earn a place on the leaderboard, which shows the top 10 largest worms currently alive.
As we mentioned above, the game is an MMO since there are many, many players that are slithering on one board at any given time. Crashing against the body of another player spells instant death for your worm, as well as the dropping of all the pellets you’ve collected. It’s always an awesome sight watching the biggest worms in the server crash into another and bursting into hundreds of shiny pellets. The lag spike that happens on account of this event is both fearsome and amazing to behold.
Enter the Arcade Game
While Slither.io first came out as a mobile and browser game, it’s massive success has spurned developers to port it to other platforms. Fast forward to late 2018 when renowned arcade game company Raw Thrills unveiled the first ever Slither.io arcade cabinet, which offered some upgrades from the original, as well as a ticket redemption function to reward players based on their performance. This new cabinet has now been released for arcades to add to their line-up, as a 3-player arcade cabinet sporting a top-of-the-line 55” display.
The game is designed so that up to 3 players can engage in competitive gameplay to see who’s the last worm standing (slithering?). Aside from this limitation, considering that the original game was a single-player MMO, the camera angle is vastly different. Instead of the camera following each player around in splitscreen fashion, it’s zoomed all the way back so that the entire arena is visible at any given moment.
The controls are also vastly different from the mobile and PC versions. Worms are controlled using a knob, which players can spin to alter their direction. This steering wheel like control makes it easy for anyone to use. Furthermore, they also have a button for boosting, and another one for using power ups, which are also new additions to the game.
Aside from the slight changes to the gameplay, the cabinet comes equipped with a couple of new goodies, such as LED-to-game lighting, which synchronizes the lighting to the events that are transpiring on the screen. Additionally, the cabinet also features QR code connectivity so that players can upload their high scores and compare them to those of other gamers around the world. Curiously enough, anyone can consult these high scores from anywhere, as Raw thrills hosts them on their new “Hall of Fame” website. You can find these leaderboards via the following link.
